She was told that Esther died at birth, but really her sister, Miss Barbary, took Esther and raised her in secret. Esther’s father is a man named Captain Hawdon, who is also Nemo. Lady Dedlock says that no one knows her secret, but she is very afraid that Mr. Tulkinghorn will find out and expose her. Esther returns to Bleak House and confides in Mr. Jarndyce. He is very kind and tells her that he has fallen in love with her.
Storyline
While listening to the reading by Mr Tulkinghorn, the family solicitor, of an affidavit, she recognises the handwriting on the copy. The sight affects her so much she almost faints, which Mr Tulkinghorn notices and investigates. He traces the copyist, a pauper known only as "Nemo", in London. Mr. del Toro of course believes in ghosts, and if any spirit invades his space, it is that of Forrest J Ackerman, a horror and science-fiction writer whom Mr. del Toro began reading as a child. They became friends in Los Angeles, talking shop over desserts at the House of Pies.

After a confrontation with Mr Tulkinghorn, Lady Dedlock flees her home, leaving a note apologising to Sir Leicester for her conduct. Mr Tulkinghorn dismisses Hortense, who is no longer of any use to him.
Mr. Tulkinghorn discovers that a poor boy named Jo, who sweeps the streets nearby, knew the writer a little and Jo is sent for at the inquest. Some other overseas broadcasters, such as Australia's ABC, purchased the series in an eight-part, one-hour-episode format. Meanwhile, Mrs. Rouncewell, the housekeeper at Chesney Wold, finds out that George is her long-lost son.
